Bangkok to Laoag

Laoag is the capital of historic Ilocos Norte province.  In the local dialect, the word Laoag means “light” and the city serves as the commercial capital of the region.

No other place in the country reflects such historical legacy as the Ilocos province where it lies. The 17th-century Paoay Church and Bell Tower of Gothic-Baroque-Oriental design is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.   Its coral stone bell tower served as an observation post of the "Katipuneros" during the Philippine Revolution. The Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos is another landmark.  Built in 1892, it is the highest lighthouse in the Philippines.

Also reminiscent of its rich heritage are the ancestral homes of significant men in Philippine history such as Juan Luna, the greatest Filipino painter; the martyr priest Jose Burgos; and the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Likewise not to miss is the city of Vigan, the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Established in the 16th century, its architecture exemplifies the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines and from China with those from Europe to create a unique culture and townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.

The beauty of Ilocos is not merely depicted by these remarkable historical sites.  The calm and clear waters of Pagudpud Beach rival that of Boracay’s.
