Manila to Bangkok
Bangkok began as a city of canals and elephant paths, on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, also known as the River of Kings. A construction boom that began in the 1950s resulted in glimmering skyscrapers methodically encroaching on Bangkok's ancient temple grounds. Her favorite mode of transit, the "tuk-tuk" - a smoke-belching three-wheeled vehicle - is now being elbowed out by sleek cars and mass transport systems. Yet in spite of the struggle between the traditional and the modern, Bangkok's charm remains. There is the Grand Palace that ties her people to a cherished heritage. There is the deep religiosity that tempers the march to commercialism.
Bangkok's unique character is best shown in the attractions she offers: the Floating Market, Rose Garden, Vimanmek and Abhisek Dusit Museum, and southeast of Bangkok - Pattaya Beach and Coral Island.
