Manila to Jakarta
Since its occupation by the Malays, Dutch, French and Japanese, Jakarta has grown into a metropolis of ten million people of diverse cultures and persuasions. Yet Jakarta has remained true to its philosophy of unity in diversity.
Much of Jakarta has changed in the last decade. Skyscrapers and overlapping motorways now define her skyline. Nevertheless, a semblance of its colonial past under the Dutch can still be gleaned in the architecture of its houses and buildings. Residential districts with market gardens and makeshift "kampung" dwellings still dot the city's perimeters.
Jakarta continues to attract millions of tourists to its landmarks, recreation centers and natural wonders. Some of these are the Old Batavia and Dreamland - the Disneyland of the East.
